Genocide wreaks havoc on a medical system.
After the 1994 genocidal war, Rwanda developed a critical shortage of medical providers. There were 1-2 million deaths over a 3 - month period. Many health providers were killed or fled the country. Since then, there have not been enough physicians and other health care providers in Rwanda to meet the health care needs of the people, leaving Rwanda has been very dependent on medical volunteers.
