Description of Human Resources for Health Program
Brown University and Columbia University are part of a consortium of American universities working to develop the first sustainable graduate medical education programs in the country of Rwanda. Rwanda has made incredible strides in development in recent years, and its government has especially focused on improvements in the health sector. As part of its efforts to strengthen human resources for health in the country, the Rwandan Ministry of Health is partnering with 10 different universities to develop new graduate medical, nursing, and health management education programs in the country. Brown University and Columbia University are currently the lead US institutions for the Emergency Medicine component of the program, sponsoring full-time Emergency Physicians for one-year assignments developing the specialty of emergency medicine in Rwanda and training the first classes of Rwandan emergency medicine residents.
We are seeking Board Eligible or Board Certified emergency physicians with enthusiasm for working in a developing country, cultural flexibility and competence, and a passion for making a positive contribution to Rwanda’s healthcare delivery system. Prior global health experience, teaching experience, and French language skills a plus. Candidates should also have a minimum of 1-2 years of clinical experience post-residency. Both US and non-US emergency physicians are welcome to apply.
Salary and Benefits
Starting salary of $80,000 per year. In addition, health insurance, evacuation insurance, and moving costs for the physician and their family will be covered. Physicians will also receive a monthly housing stipend of $1000-$1700 depending on the number of family members, as well as reimbursement for round trip airfare to and from Rwanda for them and their family. Malpractice insurance and medical licensure will be provided by the Rwanda Ministry of Health.
